Rollepaal Launches the X-screw: An Upgrade for Foam Core Pipe Extrusion

Optimized for Foam Core Extrusion

The X-screw introduces a critical technical refinement by extending the screw length by approximately 3D, a change that improves melt quality and boosts production stability- two essential factors for high-quality foam core pipe manufacturing.

Traditionally, T-REX extruders are equipped with high-compression screws optimized for standard applications. However, foam core production presents unique challenges that demand increased backflow in the latter part of the extruder to ensure effective foaming. Previously, this was managed by lowering the screw fill level. This method achieved results but also had drawbacks, including lower output capacity and reduced resistance in the powder lock, which could potentially lead to issues in the vacuum vent zone. 

Smart Engineering to Solve Key Challenges

The newly developed X-screw addresses these issues by reducing backflow without compromising pressure build-up. It features an additional heating and cooling zone, enabling more precise temperature control and further enhancing melt homogeneity throughout the process. The result is a more stable, efficient, and cost-effective extrusion process tailored for foam core production.

Proven Performance at Ostendorf GmbH

The X-screw has already proven its value in the field. In one of the first pilot installations at Ostendorf GmbH in Emstek, Germany, a standard T-REX 90-30 extruder was upgraded to a 90-30X version with six heating zones, instead of the original five. The company achieved better melt consistency, increased the amount of CaCO₃ in the core layer, and reduced overall pipe cost.

Available Now for New and Existing T-REX Models

The X-screw is now available as an option for all new T-REX extruders and can also be retrofitted to existing systems, making it an accessible and impactful upgrade for manufacturers seeking to optimize foam core pipe performance.
