A new study commissioned by TEPPFA provides concrete evidence that plastic pipes, when designed, manufactured, and installed in accordance with current standards, can have actual lifetimes well above 100 years.

Plastic pipes have long been recognized for their exceptional durability and reliability. Now, a new European meta-study provides concrete evidence that plastic pipes, when designed, manufactured, and installed in accordance with current standards, can be expected to have service lifetimes well beyond 100 years. These findings offer valuable assurance to utility companies and water asset owners that their investments in plastic piping systems will endure for generations to come.

The meta-study, named '100 Years Lifetime of Plastic Pipes,' was conducted by the renowned Polymer Competence Center in Leoben, Austria. Commissioned by TEPPFA, the European Plastic Pipes and Fittings Association, this study is based on a robust statistical analysis that draws upon independent research and existing literature on the expected service lifetime of plastic pipes. The complete details of the study can be found on TEPPFA's website

In assessing the longevity of plastic pipes, the study focused on both pressure and non-pressure applications of polyethylene, polypropylene, and unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipes. These applications encompassed the transportation of potable water, natural gas, sewerage, and drainage waters. The analysis took into account operational temperatures around the pipes, with a maximum of 20°C, and assumed adherence to contemporary standards such as EN, ISO, and ASTM throughout the production, trenching, and operational phases. Notably, the study excluded industrial pipe systems used for aggressive media conveyance, floor heating applications, and the use of non-virgin materials.

The meta-study compiled a wealth of references, including scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals, protocols, reports, standards, and conference presentations. Most notably, the study incorporated data from dig-out studies of pipes that had been operating for up to 50 years. Moreover, it included 23 additional references (13 for pressure applications and 10 for non-pressure applications) that explicitly stated lifetimes of 100 years or more, employing various evaluation approaches. The study meticulously details all test types and provides full references for further validation.

Beyond the comprehensive research gathered, reports of failures, whether in pressure or non-pressure scenarios, were exceptionally rare. The few instances of failures were invariably linked to cases where standard manufacturing or installation procedures were not followed. Significantly, the study found no failures caused by material aging or incorrect pipeline design.

These groundbreaking findings highlight the exceptional quality and longevity of plastic pipes when utilized in accordance with current EN and ISO standards. The meta-study serves as a testament to the continuous advancements in plastic pipe technology and reinforces the industry's confidence in the enduring performance of plastic piping systems.
